Bengaluru Riots: 3 dead, 60 policemen injured, and over 100 accused arrested!!

 The violence took over the capital of Karnataka, Bangalore on Tuesday night after the nephew of Congress MLA Srinivas Murthy allegedly posted a derogatory social media post about Prophet Muhammad. The situation worsened so much that the police were forced to fire on the mob to control them.

On Tuesday, late at night, a mob formed outside the MLA's residence who started pelting stones and setting fire to some vehicles, because they were irked by a derogatory social media post shared by the MLA’s relative. Later on, the post was deleted but the damage was done. By 10 pm, the atmosphere became so severe that a mob of miscreants set the MLA's house on fire after vandalizing it. The fire spread outside and damaged the vehicles parked nearby.

As soon as the incident was reported, the police reached the spot and tried to placate the angry mob. But the angry mob threw stones at them and beat them as well. 60 policemen were injured in this incident. Seeing the situation worsen, police fired shots at 12 at night, which caused the crowd to disperse.

At least three people died in this incident. Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Kamal Pant said on the matter, “We have learned that three people have died during the incident. However, we are yet to ascertain the exact reason behind these deaths.” Pant added, “Police jeeps, buses, and other vehicles parked in the area were torched by the mob. Stone pelting was also rampant in the area during the late hours. Two vehicles in which DCPs arrived at the site were overturned and burnt."

Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has asked the police to take strict measures against those involved in the incident. This led to the arrest of over 100 people. A statement was released by the Bengaluru City Police which read, “Unfortunate incidents took place within the limits of DJ Halli and KG Halli police stations. The police have resorted to lathi-charge, tear gas, and open fire to keep the situation under control."

Talking about this incident, Pant tweeted, “With regard to incidents in DJ Halli, accused Naveen arrested for posting derogatory posts… also, a total of 110 accused arrested for arson, stone pelting, and assault on police. APPEAL TO ALL TO COOPERATE WITH POLICE TO MAINTAIN PEACE."
