60-Years of Mughal-e-Azam, now enlisted in the Oscar library

Dilip Kumar and Madhubala starring epic film, Mughal-e-Azam has completed 60 years of its release today. The movie was first released on the Big screen on 5th August 1960 and became an instant hit. And to mark the 60th anniversary of Mughal-e-Azam, its screenplay was enlisted into the Oscar library, a report says.

K Asif directed this historical film with Prithviraj Kapoor as Emperor Akbar, Dilip Kumar as Prince Salim, Madhubala as Anarkali, and Durga Khote as Maharani Jodha Bai. The screenplay of the film was written by K. Asif, Aman, Kamal Amrohi, Wajahat Mirza, and Ehsan Rizvi.

The son of the director, Akbar Asif presented the screenplay of the movie in front of Margaret Herrick Library of the Academy of Motion Picture Art & Sciences (AMPAS). Fans can now find three versions of this screenplay, in Hindi, Roman, and English translation at the Margaret Herrick Library.

"The journey of Mughal-e-Azam started with words from the greatest writing team ever assembled in Hindi cinema and I thought the best way to honor them was to permanently preserve their screenplay in the world’s most renowned film library,” said Akbar Asif in regards to his decision of submitting the film.

“I hope future generations can learn and get inspired by the work of my late father and his incredible team of writers. I want to humbly thank the Academy Awards for accepting the screenplay,” he added.

Mughal-e-Azam was the first full-length Indian feature film colorized for a theatrical re-release. In 2013, in a celebration for the 100th anniversary of Indian cinema, it was declared the greatest Bollywood film ever made. It also has the honor of being the biggest theatre production ever, with the release of its live musical in 2016.
