The CEO of Serum Institute, Adar Poonawalla, said the first and second phases of trials proved the safety of the vaccine. The third phase would show how much protection the vaccine would give against Covid-19. He added that Serum Institute would start the third phase of trials for this Oxford vaccine in India in August and conclude it by November.

"We will be going for large scale manufacturing in mid-August-early-August… By the end of this year, we should be able to produce 3 to 4 million doses come the end of December. That’s the target and I hope we can do that,” Poonawalla said in an interview.

As part of the first phase of trials, occurred in April and May, more than 1,000 healthy adults received the doses of the vaccine, aged between 18 and 55, in five UK hospitals, according to the trial results published in The Lancet medical journal on Monday. The vaccine had no serious side effects and induces a strong immune response in the subjects. People who received two doses had the strongest response.

As for the third phase of the trial, Poonawalla said, “The vaccine under development will be injected into 4,000-5,000 volunteers in Pune and Mumbai, which have high rates of coronavirus infections, as part of the crucial phase three of the trial which will determine if the antidote can be introduced in the market or not."

According to reports, the vaccine will cost less than 1,000 INR per dose, and India will receive half of the vaccine made by the firm and the rest will be sent to other countries. The government bought the vaccines and will distribute it to their people as a part of the immunization program.
